Design association

It was a momentus occassion when the Graphic Design Association officially launched their website on the 24th September at Ole Cafe in KL. Unfortunately, I had to attend the office 'berbuka puasa' and could not make it in time for the event.
Almost a decade ago, a handful of us founded the association and successfully registered the organisation in early 2001. It has come a long way ever since with many challenges encountered through the years .

Raya Greetings

It is the time of the year where one has to decide whether to send Raya greetings in the traditional form of a card, or an e card or an sms or not send anything at all. As usual, its always a last minute effort when one seems to be very busy all the time.
When one has to design the company's own corporate card, one has to consider the concept and the communicating message.
Eventually, what strikes the mind was the talented emilayusof's illustration, which more often than not I regularly visit her blog .
I wrote emila an email and explained my intentions, briefed her about the message of 'environmental awareness' taking the kampung as a good example for the illustration.

The masterpiece.... from http//emilayusof.com

the pix before emila transformed it into the 'illo' world

The beauty of it all at this eleventh hour, is the ease of executing the concept to fruition right in the comfort of your home. I took pictures of the staff and sent to her and in a jiffy walla - SIAP. Emila was so efficient that everything was briefed, presented, amended and produced within 36 hours. Kudos Emila, it was different, beautiful and original.

Talk about technological marvel assisting creativity.
Hope the client is amused and gives us more jobs ....

Sahur in style

On Friday we had our annual gathering of cousins and uncle/auntie for 'sahur' in one of the leading hotels along Jalan Sultan Ismail. It was the first time this Ramadhan that I decided to spend a little more than usual for a buffet meal in a hotel.  It was a good change and everyone enjoyed catching up with the times.

Even though it was way past midnight (and the buffet per head is not really that cheap), the place was reasonably filled with customers.
Fancy cars were still being jockeyed at the hotel front, the merry makers were still boogying down on the dance floor and the coffee house were still being patronised by strings of well dressed guests.
The country's petrol hike, economic downturn, inflation, political turmoil, investment uncertainty..... are they all for real? Definately not for some.

Hazriq, Alysia and Sarah were brave enough to 'meet and greet' uncle Aznil who happened to be seated next to ours.

It was incredible how Aznil appeals to the kids. Talking about idol worshipping at this age they were hysterically thrilled. He sure knows how to 'layan' them young.

I bet Aznil is not badly affected by the economy, by the look of his current popularity and cool fancy ride.

'Good on yer, Aznil'

moleskine wanabee

It may not be the real thing but I found these not so expensive soft sketchbook ala moleskine called monologue by grandluxe.com. There is no inside pocket but fairly thick reasonably good paper with a band attached across the hard cover.
I had to purchase 3 pieces, one each for Aidil, Haiqal and Shaqil, and it is truly cost effective :-) only rm 12.00 each from times bookstore.

While waiting for 'berbuka puasa', with full of enthusiasm, work commenced immediately.
Well new broom sweeps clean and hopefully not the hot hot chicken shit!

The whole idea is the will to practise sketching on whatever paper.

Hanging gardens of polyethylene

Due to the current climatic changes thats affecting our lives, its disheartening to know that there are still morons out there who has the brains to 'plant' plastic moneyplant to cover the 'construction cavities' below the prestigious KL Sentral along Jalan Travers.

Those hanging plastic will eventually end up in landfills or ocean and will take many centuries until efficiently degradable.

Couldn't they just plant the real thing?

'Scindapsus Aureus' or commonly known in Malaysia as money plant is one of the most hassle free and easy to grow plant that helps purify the air. It helps the environment especially for a country that enjoys a botanically-friendly climate.

Bukan money plant yang berhayun tetapi 'mangkok hayun'

Its the same case as the plastic palm tree 'planted' in traffic round-abouts a few years ago.

Capturing that 'magic' moment

Last Friday, while on a reccee trip to Melaka, I stumbled upon this realisation.

Excellent photography is not about a fancy camera, or an excellent subject matter or even some special effects.
Its all about the photographer!!! The patience in capturing that magic 'moment' in freezing time.
This enthusiastic gentleman continues to persevere .....just to find the right 'moment' even if it takes him a life time.

Tabik spring sir, for all this life-long passion.

Pasar ke Pasar

juicy fruits excellent for buka puasa, sold at the entrance of Pasar Chow Kit

For a change I thought it would be a good idea to stock up food during the Ramadhan by going to Pasar Chow Kit since the last I went there was like ages ago. After struggling to find a parking lot, the first impression I had upon entering the ayam and daging section is like its a market along the streets of calcutta where majority of the sellers are foreigners. The place is really filthy too.
It is not the same Pasar Chow Kit that I used to know.
I ended buying just fruits and decided to adjourn to a more familiar and cleaner Pasar Keramat

fresh fish and vegetables from Pasar Keramat anytime cheaper and fresher than some hyper market.

Ode to 20 Thorpe Road

It was the signs of the times.
After more than half a century mini 'Barulak' off Green Lane finally succumbed to the merciless. My mother's discovery came in the form of a terkejut tergempak, when one day the picture frame on the wall fell to pieces onto the floor.
A couple of days later the ceiling fell through.
After having survived the Perang Jepun and the Sumatran earthquakes, to my mother this stiring incident is comparatively akin to just a 'bunyi kontuik'.

- yes its TERMITE ATTACK !

Alhamdulillah she is safe and sound.

That was about 4 months ago and the painfully slow rehabilitation process took place immediately. Where ever possible, everything should remain intact in its original form, windows, doors, door knobs and even the toilet bowl.
Fortunately, the house is now completed and in time for the coming Aid Mubarak!
In a way its a good thing, that this happened because this major spring cleaning effort is very long overdue. Obviously, things got thrown out, replaced and even sneaked out (much to my mother's disagreement) leaving only the necessary 'junk'.
This old house has served us very well and will serve further for the future generations to come.

.
mini Barulak as it stands today.

In this house, all of us will always find solace, serenity, peace of mind or whatever you may call it.
'When the going gets tough', the tough comes back home to 20 Thorpe Road. (sung to the tune by Billy Ocean).

For the roof that you have given us, thank you so very much Ayah ( TokYah ) - Mr Thaharuddin Ahmad (Allah bless his soul) Amin.
